Set up your space
A phone, tablet or laptop on a stand is all you need. The setup tips below take five minutes.
Play with Eric
Your live lesson starts on a video call. Afterwards you know exactly what to practise this week.
Five-minute setup
- Piano: turn your phone or tablet sideways and place it at the treble end, angled down, so Eric sees both hands and the keys.
- Violin: stand back far enough that Eric sees your bow arm, left hand and posture.
- Keep the device about 1 metre from your instrument so loud passages don't distort.
- In Zoom, turn on Original sound for musicians, so the call doesn't cut out your instrument's tone.
- Sit with the light in front of you or to the side, in a quiet room.

Online lessons: your questions
Can you really learn an instrument online?
Yes. With the camera set up to show your hands (and, for violin, your bow arm), Eric can see and hear your playing in detail and fix technique, rhythm and sound just as he would in the room.
Do I need a real piano?
A piano or a keyboard works. For exams and advanced repertoire, an acoustic piano or a full-size keyboard with weighted keys is best, because it lets you practise touch and dynamics properly. Choosing an instrument? Ask Eric in your trial lesson.
Can I learn violin online?
Yes. Eric teaches violin online from first notes to performance diplomas, including ABRSM and Trinity grades.
How much do online lessons cost?
Lessons start from £35. The exact price depends on your level and lesson length, and is shown when you book.
Can I prepare for ABRSM or Trinity exams online?
Yes. Eric prepares students online for ABRSM and Trinity piano and violin grades 1–8, digital Performance Grades, theory, aural and performance diplomas. For a digital exam, you can film your exam video at home, or join the in-person Digital Exam Ready Course in London to have it recorded on a grand piano.
Can I prepare for a music aptitude test online?
Yes. Eric prepares students online for music aptitude tests. Find out more.
Are online lessons suitable for young children?
Yes. For younger children, a parent nearby helps with the camera and with noting the week's practice.
Can lessons be in Cantonese?
Yes. Lessons can be taught in English or Cantonese.
I live outside the UK. Can I still join?
Yes. Lessons are online worldwide. All lesson times are shown in UK time, Monday to Saturday.
Can I also have lessons in person?
Yes. Eric also teaches in person in Colindale, North West London (NW9).
