Score Detective

Decoding every marking

Focus: understand and play every marking on the page.

Pitch (accidentals, key signatures, clefs), tempo and speed changes, dynamics, articulation, phrasing, ornaments and repeats, with instant coaching on any pitch or rhythm issues spotted along the way.

🔍 Activity: Marking Hunt. Annotate your own score with colour pens, then play while classmates use a Junior Examiner Sheet to check that each marking is actually heard.

You leave with: the habit of never missing a marking, and an ear that listens like an examiner.

Week 2
Group masterclass · 2 hours

Style & Character

Pedalling and dynamics for every piece

Focus: choose pedalling, touch and dynamics to suit each style.

From the light, clear touch of Baroque to the rich, blended colours of Romantic and Impressionist music.

BaroqueClassicalRomanticImpressionistModern / Jazz

🧪 Activity: Style Lab Blind Test. Hear the same phrase played with different pedalling and dynamics, and decide which one fits the style best.

You leave with: a performance that goes beyond accurate, with a clear sense of style and character.

Week 3
Group masterclass · 2 hours

Mock Exam

Pressure-test your performance

Focus: a full run-through under realistic exam conditions.

Play your pieces straight through, as you would in the real exam, followed by detailed feedback.

⚖️ Activity: Peer Marking & Consensus. Evaluate performances, estimate marks and discuss the marking criteria together, with all feedback kept constructive and guided by Eric. Then Eric gives his own examiner-style feedback based on the published criteria.

You leave with: confidence under pressure, a clear idea of how ABRSM and Trinity assess, and your target mark band before recording day.

Questions

Good to know

I already have a piano teacher. Why join?

Keep your teacher. They get the pieces learnt; this course is exam coaching for the last stretch. In 4 weeks in London you get focused coaching for exam day, a mock exam with examiner-standard marks, and your exam video recorded properly, all in one place.

How do I record my ABRSM Performance Grade video?

The exam boards ask for one continuous, unedited video of your performance. Most families film at home on a phone, often many times. On this course we record it for you in Week 4, on a grand piano with a professional camera and microphone, with two complete takes and Eric's advice in between. Always check the latest requirements on the ABRSM or Trinity website before you submit.

Is this an official exam?

No. The course prepares and records your exam video. You book the exam with ABRSM or Trinity and submit the video yourself, and the exam board gives the official result. Course marks are a mock assessment by Eric.

Do I need to know all four pieces already?

Ideally, yes. The course polishes pieces you can already play, and your recording slot captures all four in one continuous take, as the exam boards require. If one or more pieces aren't ready yet, send Eric the ones you have, and send him a video of the others in an Online Coaching session so he can fast-track them for you.

Why do you ask for a recording first?

The course works best when everyone can already play their four pieces through. Eric listens to every recording so each group starts at the right level, and he will get in touch personally about the best next step.

Are groups split by grade?

Yes. There are three levels: Grade 1–4, Grade 5–6 and Grade 7–8. Higher grades have longer pieces, so they get a longer recording slot.

Can I take Trinity instead of ABRSM?

Yes. Trinity Digital Grades also use one continuous video. The Repertoire-only pathway (four pieces) works the same way. If you take the Technical Work pathway, tell us when you register.

Can the video be edited?

No. The exam boards require one continuous, unedited take with no added sound effects. That's why we record with professional camera and microphone equipment in a grand piano room, so the sound is at its best straight from the recording.

What if I make a mistake on recording day?

There's time for two complete takes, and Eric gives you professional advice between them.

Do you offer this for diplomas?

A group diploma course is coming soon. Eric teaches all the performance diplomas: ABRSM ARSM and LRSM, and Trinity ATCL, LTCL and FTCL. If you're preparing for one now, book a private lesson with Eric.
